Yoga for Athletes

Physical & Mental Conditioning for Power & Flexibility

Yoga is an excellent method of enhancing your performance that combines both physical conditioning and focused concentration.  One of the most essential elements for athletic performance is balance.  Every sport has certain movements that build your body in specific ways.  This can lead to imbalances and possible injuries.

Yoga for Sports & Fitness may help prevent injuries by bringing balance back to your body along with relaxation and focused concentration your mind.  By improving mental clarity and concentration you may expect to see improvements in studies, behavior and even sleep habits.  Yoga develops strength, balance, suppleness, awareness, and alignment.  It is not just about stretching, but is a wonderful way of cross-training that can be used to bring your body into balance and make it more adaptable to any movement.

During yoga sessions you should wear clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable.  A yoga mat called a “sticky mat” is used this helps to keep your feet and hands from slipping while in the postures.  The yoga exercises are usually performed in bare feet.  Yoga can add a new dimension to your overall athletic performance.  During yoga sessions we will be paying particular attention to our breathing and body postures.  These will be briefly described below:

Breathing – Deep, slow breathing is encouraged, proper breathing helps the body to achieve a state of balance and helps to reconnect the mind back to the body.  Pay attention to your breathing and use your breath to help your body to open up and relax. This can also be very helpful to you when you are competing in your sport.  In a tight moment when a lot is on the line -  remember to breathe!

Postures – Different yoga “postures” work in different ways.  Some stretch and strengthen muscles, while others help to improve the skeletal system, while others help to compress and relax the organs and nerves.  Ultimately they all work together to perfect the body and soul.

When doing the postures always listen to your body and be aware to  do only what feels right for you today.  From day to day your body changes, so what felt right for you yesterday or last week, might not be the same thing that feels right for you today.  Only go as far as you feel comfortable today.  Yoga is a process – enjoy the journey!
